Ecologically an advantage
Biogas from domestic generation spares the environment
The Kyoto protocol stipulates that the emission of greenhouse gases has to be reduced. Greenhouse gases should be reduced by eight percent by the year 2020 throughout the EU.
Unlike other fossil fuels, the CO2-balance of biogas is neutral relative to its combustion. It is generated from short-term renewable raw materials such as maize and cereals. During the growth phase these plants bond the same amount of CO2 from the atmosphere as is released during combustion. Fossil energy sources, on the other hand, release CO2 during present day combustion that was bonded millions of years ago. This additional CO2, relative to the present day, thus enters the atmosphere.
The local cultivation of the renewable raw material also relieves the burden on our climate. The biomaterial to generate biogas normally grows on the fields in the area around the relevant biogas plant. It is harvested locally and transported to the biogas plant with no great energy input.
